Katie is a Brooklyn-based instructional designer who specializes in language acquisition and educational technology.
Currently, Katie works as a Director of Instructional Design at EnGen, a virtual English language training platform for immigrants and refugees in the United States. Previously, she worked as the Head of Product & Education at ChatClass, a language learning platform that helps students in Brazil and Germany learn English.
Katie graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with dual B.A. degrees in Anthropology and Art Practice. She later earned her M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Columbia University Teachers College in May 2015. She has studied Portuguese, Chinese, and French languages, and her research interests include assessment, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics, artificial intelligence, adaptive learning, and gamification.
Katie has over 10 years of experience as an English teacher, and has worked at schools and colleges in the U.S. and overseas in Bangkok, Thailand. Most recently, she was an English instructor at the United Nations, where she taught language and communication courses. She has taught academic, general, and business English at the Columbia University Community Language Program, Westchester Community College, ELS Berkeley, and Insight English. Katie's passion for language assessment led her to an internship as a test developer at Educational Testing Service (ETS), where she wrote items for the TOEFL iBT Speaking standardized test, taken by hundreds of thousands of students every year.
In 2016, Katie worked as the Assessment Coordinator for Sesame Workshop, where she coordinated the development of full-length courses for English language learners in Japan. In this position, she oversaw content production for course materials, lesson plans, and assessments. She managed a staff of freelance writers and and worked with art and animation teams to specify and obtain assets for the project. In 2017, she worked at the City University of New York (CUNY) Research Foundation ,where she developed curriculum for New York City employees in the Office of Child Support Services (OCSS)
