Lesson Plans
I have prepared four sample lesson plans which I'd like to share. All four of these lesson plans were created for an advanced level English course at the Columbia Language Program at the Teachers College, Columbia University. To view the lesson plans, simply click on the links below!
UNIT FOUR
Phrasal Verbs in Authentic Contexts: In this class, I incorporated video clips from "Modern Family" and a listening passage from "NPR" and tied them in with the theme of our unit, which was "personality." The grammar focus was phrasal verbs, so students were challenged to identify them in these clips as well as to produce them in a variety of different ways, including sentence-writing and role-play activities.
UNIT THREE
Culture Shock & Relative Clauses: The goal of this lesson was not only to get students to think deeply about "Culture Shock" by discussing an article and conducting a jigsaw learning activity about the five stages, but also to practice identifying and producing relative clauses.
UNIT TWO
Maya Angelou's "Phenomenal Woman," Dove's "Real Beauty", and Vocabulary Related to Beauty: To tie to the theme of the textbook unit, which was beauty, we looked at a number of authentic materials related to beauty through a critical lens. Students were able to engage in and learn a wide variety of vocabulary related to beauty and were also able to learn about the history of Maya Angelou's life.
UNIT ONE
Passive Voice & Steve Jobs Commencement Speech: In this class, I was focusing on improving the speed and accuracy with which students were able to produce the passive voice. Additionally, they learned how to organize information using a graphic organizer by determining the central idea of a text - in this case, a reading/listening clip from Steve Jobs' commencement speech at Stanford University. Finally, we worked on pronunciation by looking at stress patterns in compound words.
